How Gift Aid works

Details

All of the details about Gift Aid are here.

Briefly

Gift Aid is a concession by which when you donate money, the tax authorities treat it as if the money you gave was not taxable - in practice it’s done by refunding to the charity the tax that you paid. As long as you pay tax, whether as a worker or a pensioner, Gift Aid allows the charity to recover the tax that you have already paid on amounts that you donate. This means that, in effect, the charity gets 25% more than you have given.

Just one example

Let’s assume that you’ve earned £10. You pay £2 tax, and have £8 left. If you decide to donate that £8, then HMRC will treat it as if you gave the whole £10, so the charity is allowed to recover the £2 tax that you paid.
